Major Prisoner Swap Between U.S. and Russia: Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan Among Released

August 1, 2024

Ankara — In a significant prisoner exchange between the United States, its allies, and Russia, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan have been released. This swap, one of the largest since the “Cold War,” involved over a dozen prisoners being exchanged, including political prisoners and journalists from the “U.S. and Europe,” for eight Russians held in various countries.

The exchange included notable figures such as Russian-American journalist “Alsu Kurmasheva” and Russian-British activist “Vladimir Kara-Murza.” Turkey played a crucial role in coordinating the swap, which took place at Ankara airport. President Joe Biden praised the exchange as a “feat of diplomacy,” highlighting the importance of international alliances and the complex negotiations that led to this agreement.

Gershkovich, arrested in “Moscow” in March 2023 and charged with espionage, was sentenced to 16 years in prison. His release, along with Whelan’s, who has been held in Russia since 2018 on similar charges, marks a significant moment of relief for their families and supporters. Both have consistently denied the charges against them, with the U.S. government also asserting their wrongful detention.

This exchange comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West, particularly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The release of these prisoners is celebrated as a rare moment of cooperation in an otherwise strained relationship, highlighting the ongoing complexities in U.S.-Russia relations.
